Frequently Asked Questions

How fit must I be participate in this tour?
Individuals are required to have a reasonable level of fitness for this tour. The walk is of an easy level of difficulty, but though it is not strenuous, patrons must be able to withstand its length.

Is it dangerous to be walking through the park at night?
Your UDU guides have extensive knowledge about the Royal National Park and a high level of familiarity with the walking tracks, as well as being Senior First-Aid qualified. You will be perfectly safe to relax and enjoy the experience whilst following their sound instruction.

How far is the actual distance that we walk?
The walk is from Bundeena to Wattamolla with a distance of less than 10km (which can be done in about 2.5 hours during the day)

How often are breaks and for how long?
Breaks are quite frequent. These include a midnight tea, heaps of night time activities such as glow in the dark boomerang throwing, star gazing and photography sessions, and a swim in the lagoon at Wattamolla.

How long does it take for your vision to adjust to the darkness?
Usually from 20 minutes to 1 hour, by not using white light we allow our eyes to fulfill their night potential... you'll be amazed how much you can see.  We'll teach you all about it too.

How far do you walk from the edge of the cliffs?
Safety is first and foremost with UDU.  There are some areas where the track goes close to cliff edges, however your UDU guide will be leading and advise you of these.

Is it safe to swim at night? What about sharks?
The swimming will take place at Wattamolla in the morning.  The cove is well protected, however if you've seen Jaws recently you may prefer the tranquil Wattamolla lagoon, complete with waterfall and palm tree.

Will there be wildlife that I need to be careful of, such as snakes?
There are deer, lizards, snakes, fish, frogs and wallabies. Snakes are present at night in the warmer months, however staying on the paths will ensure safety.  Also, the vibrations in the earth from foot-steps warn snakes of our arrival, and they are timid creatures and will usually move away.

Shouldn’t I be sleeping at that time? What if I'm tired?
A special drink will be provided, known affectionately as "Moonshine". It's a non-alcoholic mixture of various drinks to keep you buzzing throughout the night. Also get plenty of rest leading up to the walk.  We have plenty of time, and usually aim to arrive into Wattamolla with plenty of time before sunrise, so you can nap on the beach if you like.

Vincent Adillon, France

I've been to the Royal National Park many times, but never at night. The moonwalk tour was so fantastic and gave me a whole new perspective on the park. Andy, the guide, was full of energy and information and put on a fabulous dinner! I would reccommend the tour for tourists and locals alike. It's such a unique experience! Can't wait to go on the day tour in the summer!!‎

Jenny Hellsing, Sydney

I was lucky enough to do a Moonwalk - on New Years Eve, no less! It was an incredible experience - the guide was engaging and well informed, the views and scenery were fantastic and the beaches are beautiful. The best part is that all of this is so conveniently close to the city - after 28 years of visiting Sydney, I am so glad to have experienced what Royal National Park has to offer in such a unique way - look forward to my next tour!‎

Peter Solness- Illuminated Landscapes

This is a very unique opportunity to walk and talk with world class photographer Peter Solness. You may have seen his most recent work, Illuminated Landscapes currently on exhibition at Customs House:

"By making the artistic choice to light each vista, he reinvents each scene before him, adding a dream-like nocturnal beauty to every photograph. Yet despite their photographic purity and lack of manipulation, there remains something painterly in this photographer’s approach. Light doesn’t reflect, so much as emit from each subject, in ways that are similar to Surrealist painters such as Paul Delvaux".
